
This is the most common objection to metal roofing, and it deserves a straight answer rather than the usual reassurance.
The straight answer has two halves. Metal is measurably louder than asphalt at the roof surface. And that measurement has very little to do with what you actually hear inside your house.
The measurement
Acoustic research from the University of Luleå in Sweden measured rain noise on roofing assemblies over solid decking:
Six decibels is a real difference. We are not going to tell you it is inaudible, because at the roof assembly it is not — the threshold below which most people cannot distinguish two sounds is around 3 dB, and this is double that.
But the number that matters to you is not the one measured at the roof. It is the one measured in your bedroom, and between those two points sits the rest of your house.
What actually determines what you hear
Three layers sit between the panel and your ceiling, and collectively they dominate the outcome.
1. Solid decking
A residential metal roof is fastened to continuous sheathing, not to open purlins. That deck is mass, and mass is what stops sound. This single difference is most of the gap between a house and a barn.
2. Underlayment
A synthetic underlayment layer and, at the eaves, self-adhering ice barrier membrane. Both add a damping layer between panel and deck.
3. The attic and its insulation
This is the big one, and it is the reason the roofing material ends up being a minor variable.
A house with R-38 to R-60 of attic insulation experiences on the order of 15 to 25 dB less interior noise than a house with minimal or no attic insulation — regardless of what the roof is made of.
Set that against the 6 dB gap between metal and asphalt. Your insulation is doing three to four times more acoustic work than your choice of roofing material.
Current Minnesota energy code calls for roughly R-49 in the ceiling. If your attic meets that, the 6 dB difference at the panel is being attenuated by an assembly that removes several times more than that before it reaches you.
Where the reputation came from — and when it is right
The "metal roofs are loud" belief is not made up. It is an accurate memory of a genuinely loud assembly: agricultural panel screwed directly to open purlins, with nothing but air behind it.
That is a drum, in the literal acoustic sense — a thin steel membrane stretched over a cavity with no mass and no absorption anywhere in the system. Rain on it is loud, and anyone who has stood in a machine shed during a storm knows exactly how loud.
So if you are roofing a shop and you intend to spend time in it, this is a real consideration and worth designing for — sheathing, or insulation in the roof assembly, changes it substantially. If you are roofing a house, you are not building that assembly.
The noise that would actually concern us
Not rain. Thermal movement.
Steel expands and contracts with temperature — a 40-foot panel run changes length by roughly three-eighths of an inch across a Minnesota year. On a properly built standing seam roof, floating clips let the panel slide, and you may hear occasional faint ticking as it warms in the morning sun or cools at dusk. That is normal and unobtrusive.
Persistent loud cracking, banging or groaning is different. It generally means the panel is fighting a restraint instead of sliding — fixed clips where floating ones belonged, or panels pinned at both ends. The noise is the roof telling you about a problem that will eventually show up as elongated fastener holes and seams creeping open.
This is one of several reasons clip type belongs in your written quote.
If you want it quieter still
For anyone genuinely sound-sensitive, or roofing a space with a cathedral ceiling and no attic buffer:
- Make sure attic insulation is up to current code. Cheapest acoustic improvement available, and it pays for itself in heating anyway.
- Consider a stone-coated steel shingle. The granular surface breaks up impact sound and is noticeably less percussive than smooth panel.
- Specify a heavier gauge. 24-gauge is stiffer than 26 and resonates less. You want it for oil canning and denting anyway.
- Pay attention to cathedral ceilings and finished attic rooms, where there is no attic buffer at all. This is where the material genuinely matters most — worth discussing at the assessment.
How to test this yourself before committing
You do not have to take anybody's word for it, including ours. There are two ways to check, and both are better than reading a blog post about decibels.
Ask the contractor for an address. Any company that has installed metal roofs locally can point you at completed work. Drive past on a wet day and stand near it. You will not get the interior experience, but you will get an honest sense of the surface sound rather than a marketing description of it.
Better still, ask whether a past customer would let you stand inside during rain. Some will, particularly if the job went well. Ten minutes in somebody's upstairs bedroom during a shower answers this question permanently, in a way that no measurement can.
If a contractor cannot produce a single local address of completed work, that tells you something more useful than the noise answer did.
The honest summary
Metal is about 6 dB louder than asphalt at the roof. In a house with a decked roof, underlayment and a code-compliant insulated attic, that difference is substantially absorbed before it reaches you, and most homeowners do not identify their roof as a noise source.
